AES File Encryption Using WinZip version 9.0

  1. Make sure both you and the recipient of this file are using Version 9.0 or later of WinZip.  Version 9.0 is the first version to support AES encryption techniques. You can download it from www.WinZip.com.
  2. Add your document or data file to a Zip archive.

One way to add your file to a Zip archive is to simply right-click the file and select Add to Zip File under the WinZip heading.    Then double-click the file to launch WinZip. (If you do not have WinZip installed - select Use Evaluation Version, then select Add.  To have WinZip installed on your computer, contact your local ISD department.)

  1.  Click on the Encrypt button.

  1. If a warning dialog box appears, just click OK.
  2. Next, enter a password that will be used to encrypt the document.

  1. Make sure either 128-bit AES encryption or 256-Bit AES encryption is selected. Do NOT use Zip 2.0 compatible encryption!!!!     Click OK.
  2. Once your Zip file is Encrypted, you’ll notice an asterik (*) after the file name confirming the file is encrypted.

  1. Be sure to send the Encryption Password separately, either as a separate email, or by way of a phone call, so as not to compromise the password used to decrypt the file.
